Foamy urine: The other tell-tale sign of the nephrotic syndrome is the presence of foam around the urine. Noticing cloudy or frothy urine can tell a lot about your kidney's health.

Weight gain: Fluid retention due to albumin loss also results in weight gain in some patients.

Fatigued body: Having waste substances in the blood when your kidneys are not working properly can result in the fatigued body.

Loss of appetite: Food may taste like metal, or your taste bud may change completely. You may not feel the urge to consume anything, or the stomach may become bloated.

What are the common causes of nephrotic syndrome?

Nephrotic syndrome occurs due to damage to the tiny blood vessels of the kidneys called glomeruli. The glomeruli act as the sieves of the kidneys through which the blood passes. Healthy glomeruli keep the blood protein while eliminating the right amount of fluid in the body. On the other hand, damaged glomeruli may allow the blood protein to skip or leave through them, which makes the urine foamy and ultimately leading to nephrotic syndrome.

This means the conditions which can inflame the glomeruli or damage them occurs, and you may also develop nephrotic syndrome. They are classified as the primary or secondary causes of nephrotic syndrome.

Diabetic kidney disease: Diabetes can affect the glomeruli in the long run. Too much blood sugar flowing in the bloodstream can make the filters go weakened with time.

Minimal change disease: Minimal change disease is the common reason why a child gets nephrotic syndrome. Although it causes low kidney function, but when the doctor tests the tissue of the kidneys under the microscope, it appears there is no alteration or change. The cause is not known yet.

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis: The scaring of some parts of the glomeruli may result in FSGS. There could be a genetic disorder also that may prompt focal segmental glomerulosclerosis or FSGS.

Membranous nephropathy: When the membranes of the kidneys get thickened, you get membranous nephropathy. But, there are some other reasons also that may cause membranous nephropathy, such as hepatitis B, malaria, lupus, cancer, etc.

Systemic lupus erythematosus: It is serious kidney damage caused because of inflammation.

Amyloidosis: When substances called amyloid proteins to get clogged up in the kidneys, they damage the filtering system or capacity of the kidneys.

A blood clot in a kidney vein: Renal vein thrombosis is a condition or a disease that blocks the vein connected to the kidneys and result in damage to the nephrons.
